Opening of Social Housing in Drohobych: A New Home for Internally Displaced Ukrainians

A significant milestone has been reached in Drohobych — the official opening of a new social housing building for internally displaced Ukrainians. This project is part of a broader effort to provide safer, dignified housing for people affected by the war.

The new social housing complex consists of 12 fully equipped apartments, which will now become home to 60 Ukrainians who lost their housing due to the full-scale invasion. For many of them, this is not just a place to live — it’s a new beginning, a safe space filled with warmth, hope, and the opportunity to rebuild their lives.

This is more than just walls and a roof — this is a symbol of support and stability for families who have endured loss and displacement.

During the opening ceremony, attendees witnessed a touching moment as new residents received keys to their apartments. There were tears of joy, children running into their new rooms, and a feeling of excitement and relief in the air. It was a powerful reminder of how social housing can restore a sense of normalcy and dignity.

Among the guests at the event were Taras Kuchma, Mayor of Drohobych, and Maksym Kozytskyi, Head of the Lviv Regional Military Administration, who emphasized the importance of long-term solutions for internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Ukraine.

This project demonstrates the power of partnership. The social housing initiative in Drohobych was made possible thanks to the efforts of our donor AHLF and our partners – UNHCR and Drohobych City Council.

Together, we are working to create sustainable housing solutions for IDPs in Ukraine, ensuring that those who lost everything due to the war have a chance to start over with dignity.
