The IDP shelter in Kalush has celebrated its 2nd anniversary, and has become home to 41 internally displaced people, including 14 children. The space, which was created as a temporary shelter, has turned into a real family community, where people have found not only a roof over their heads, but also support, mutual understanding and new hope.
The children were happy to receive gifts and sweets brought by Shelter’s friends. Laughter echoed in the corridors, and the kids played as if forgetting for a moment the difficulties their families had faced. Adults, while having a cup of tea, recalled the path that had brought them to Kalush. Some came from the destroyed Bakhmut region, others from Kherson or Sumy regions. All of them came in search of a safe life for themselves and their children.
On the day of the celebration, a special atmosphere reigned in Teremok. “I didn’t know what would happen next… I was scared, I didn’t know where I was going. But I came and found a home here, even if it is not permanent, but a home. Here I was greeted warmly,” says Nina, a resident of the shelter from Sumy region.
The social housing project for IDPs in Kalush was implemented by the MoveUkraine team with the help of donors in cooperation with partners. Over the two years of its operation, the shelter has become an example of how important it is to provide people with decent conditions for life, development and adaptation.
The residents of Teremok join joint initiatives, support each other, and take care of the house where everyone has become a little closer. They celebrate birthdays, celebrate holidays together, and learn to dream again.
