As part of a charitable initiative of the MoveUkraine foundation in summer of 2023, seven water purification stations were set up for the residents of Kherson, Zaporizhia, and Dnipropetrovsk regions which suffered from flooding as a result of the explosion of the Kakhovka hydroelectric station. As a result of the project’s implementation, they were transferred and placed in Kherson, Uspenivka, Dobropillia, Nikopol, Pokrov and Limanets.
The whole world anxiously follows the events of a new war in Europe, Russian-Ukrainian war takes new forms causing increasing suffering to the civilian population. It is hard to believe that in the 21st century, openly barbaric actions against the civilian population and its supporting infrastructure are still possible. In southern Ukraine, the struggle with the consequences of the destruction caused by the Russian army on June 6, 2023, to the dam of the Kahovka Hydroelectric Power Station and the resulting flooding is still ongoing. In particular, there was an urgent need for clean drinking water, especially in those settlements that were directly affected by the disaster. The issue of establishing water supply became one of the key factors in preserving the life and health of the local population. The situation was critical and unpredictable. Unfortunately, there is often a problem of buying water in stores, which are also not available everywhere. Water is a basic element of the community’s return to normal everyday life. The water supply infrastructure was largely destroyed by military actions. For example, its main elements in rural areas, the towers of Rozhnivska (a typical project of a water tower), were destroyed by the occupiers’ shelling.
The Move Ukraine charity foundation actively participated in solving this problem by providing funding to purchase seven “Organic MWTP 1000 Water Purification Stations” produced by the Ukrainian LLC “Difrano” in Kyiv. They have a productivity of up to 1.3 m ³ per hour (up to 30 m ³ per day).
The installation of water purification systems was done directly by the manufacturer. The search for communities that are priorities in providing water was carried out, in particular, by the CF “Ukrainian Educational Platform” (UEP), which actively cooperates with moveukraine. Artem Kostyuchenko, Head of the Department of National Partnerships of the UEP, acted as a coordinator of the process of installing cleaning devices. Thanks to them, pumping and filtering stations for water purification are located in Kherson (Kherson), Zaporizhzhya (Gulyaypole and Dobropillya) and Dnipropetrovsk (Nikopol) regions.
The CF “Mamai,” which collaborates with the town of Pokrov (Dnipropetrovsk region) and the village of Lymanets in the Dariivska territorial community (Kherson region), also joined the search for needy communities.
The water purification at the purification stations had a powerful effect. As a result of the work carried out, the quality of drinking water significantly improved (thorough purification from impurities and disinfection), which, according to experts, significantly exceeds state standards. According to experts, these water purification systems are so effective that the water at the outlet even equals the mineral water from Morshyn.
Of course, such assistance caused positive emotions of the affected residents. This motivates people to return, because access to the basic benefits of civilization is improving, the threat of poisoning disappears. In particular, Artem Kostiuchenko notes: “They are very grateful, people are gradually returning. As soon as there is access to basic goods, resettlers are more willing to return. At the moment, mainly elderly people live here, and it is difficult for them to collect water for the whole week in buckets from mobile water carriers and carry them home. All installed purification systems are located near shelters. Therefore, in case of sirens, people can quickly move to a safe place.”
The situation after the destruction of the Kahovka Hydroelectric Power Station is still difficult, but active assistance from various, both state and public structures, including our fund, has shown that people in trouble will not be left on their own. Sincere thanks to all donors who contributed to the active assistance to the people in southern Ukraine. The purchased water filtration systems are operational and provide tangible results every day. Pump and filter stations are made in Kyiv, and therefore, the money spent remained in Ukraine, which is a plus for the economy.
